7 ‘Lekker’ Things to Do in South Africa

7 ‘Lekker’ Things to Do in South Africa

I’ve spent years exploring this incredible country, and honestly, South Africa never stops surprising me. Whether you’re chasing wildlife, world-class wine, or that perfect sunset over the ocean, there’s something here that’ll get under your skin in the best way possible. Here are seven experiences you absolutely shouldn’t miss.

1. Safari at Kruger National Park

Forget those glossy brochure photos—nothing prepares you for your first elephant sighting in the wild. Kruger is South Africa’s crown jewel, and I always tell visitors to enter through Phalaborwa Gate early morning (gates open at 5:30 AM in summer). The northern section near Letaba has incredible leopard sightings, and it’s far less crowded than the south. Pack binoculars, loads of patience, and download the Kruger sightings app so other visitors can clue you in on recent animal locations.

2. Wine Tasting in Stellenbosch

The Stellenbosch wine route is where many a local brings every out-of-town friend, but don’t only visit the obvious estates. Head to Delaire Graff Estate instead—yes, it’s upscale, but the views over the Helshoogte Pass are absolutely worth it. Book the wine and chocolate pairing (they do seatings at 11 AM and 2 PM). If you want something more laid-back, Lourensford has picnic spots under oak trees where you can bring your own food. Just remember to book tastings in advance, especially over weekends.

3. Hike Lion’s Head at Sunset

Table Mountain gets all the glory, but Lion’s Head is a go-to hike in Cape Town. It takes about an hour to summit, and if you time it for late afternoon, you’ll catch sunset over Camps Bay with the city lights starting to twinkle below. Go on a full moon—locals do a tradition called the Full Moon Hike with headlamps, and the atmosphere is magical. There’s a bit of chain-assisted climbing near the top, but nothing too hectic. Start by 5 PM in summer to catch the best light.

4. Swim with Penguins at Boulders Beach

These aren’t zoo penguins—African penguins waddle right past you at Boulders Beach in Simon’s Town. Arrive before 9 AM to beat the tour buses, and bring reef-safe sunscreen because the water is shockingly cold (it’s the Atlantic, after all). There’s a small entrance fee that goes toward conservation, which these endangered little guys desperately need. Afterward, grab fish and chips at Bertha’s Restaurant down the road. The snoek is excellent.

5. Explore the Drakensberg Amphitheatre

The Tugela Falls hike in the Drakensberg will test your legs, but standing at the top of that chain ladder looking at the second-highest waterfall in the world? Worth every burning muscle. The hike takes 6-8 hours round trip, so start at sunrise from the Witsieshoek Mountain Resort parking area. Winter months (June to August) sometimes see snow at the top—pack layers. The Amphitheatre’s sheer cliff faces are genuinely humbling in person.

6. Browse Neighbourgoods Market in Johannesburg

Every Saturday in Braamfontein, the Neighbourgoods Market turns into the best food scene in Jozi. Get there around 10 AM, grab a cortado from Father Coffee, then work your way through Ethiopian injera, proper bunny chow, and artisanal everything. The vibe is young, creative, and refreshingly local. Park in the market’s dedicated lot—street parking in Braam can be dodgy. Markets run until 3 PM, but the buzz peaks around midday.

7. Cage Dive with Great Whites in Gansbaai

Look, it’s touristy, but coming face-to-face with a great white shark is genuinely life-changing. Gansbaai, about two hours from Cape Town, is shark alley for a reason. Book with Marine Dynamics—they’re serious about conservation and the guides actually know their stuff. Trips leave early (around 7 AM) and last about five hours. Take seasickness tablets even if you think you’ll be fine. The water’s murky and cold, but when that shadow appears through the green, your heart will stop.

After all that exploring, you’ll want a proper home base to return to. Firefly Villas offers quality accommodation that lets you experience South Africa’s Whale Coast like a local, not just another tourist passing through. Book direct at and skip the OTA fees.
