Hermanus turns into the whale watching capital of the world every winter, and most first time visitors still get the timing wrong.
The official season runs from June through to November. But if you want the good stuff, mothers and newborn calves cruising metres from the rocks, ring fence August to October. That is peak Southern Right Whale season in Walker Bay. Humpback whales pass through earlier, roughly June to September, and Bryde’s whales are residents who show up year round if you know where to look.
You do not need a boat for any of this. Hermanus is one of the only places on the planet where you can watch whales from your bed.
Where to stand for free
The Cliff Path runs 12 kilometres along the coast and has more whale sightings per metre than almost anywhere in South Africa. Three spots do the heavy lifting:
– Kwaaiwater, the most reliable lookout point, and you can drive right up to it
– Sievers Point, closest to where the whales actually play and breach
– Voelklip and Grotto beaches, where you watch from the rocks above the water with the whole bay in view
Hermanus still has a whale crier, an actual person who walks the town blowing a kelp horn whenever a sighting happens nearby. It sounds like a gimmick until you are jogging towards the harbour because you heard the horn from your villa.
If you want to get on the water
Licensed operators run two hour boat trips out of New Harbour. Book a few days ahead from August onward, trips sell out fast around the Hermanus Whale Festival in late September, which is also the busiest weekend of the year for accommodation across the whole Whale Coast.
Where to actually base yourself
Land based whale watching only works if you are staying somewhere with a view, not twenty minutes inland fighting festival traffic to reach the Cliff Path. A villa in Voelklip, Eastcliff or Kwaaiwater puts you within walking distance of the best lookout points and the beach. Kleinmond and Franskraal/De Kelders sit further along the same migration route, quieter, fewer crowds, same whales.
