In the heart of Hermanus, Lembu Gallery weaves a story of endurance and creativity. It all began amidst the untamed beauty of Zimbabwe, where Ian and Ed’s paths converged in 1996. Their shared passion for art and adventure blossomed against the backdrop of the Matobo Hills, where they forged a partnership destined for greatness.

During Zimbabwe’s tourism boom, Ian’s expertise in photographic safaris and Ed’s knack for interior design merged seamlessly. Together, they breathed life into lodges, infusing them with bespoke fabrics inspired by Africa’s vibrant landscapes. Notable among their endeavors was the transformation of the Lodge at the Ancient City, overlooking the majestic ruins of Great Zimbabwe.

However, turmoil struck in 2001, as political unrest engulfed Zimbabwe, culminating in the tragic loss of their cherished home to flames. Undeterred, Ian and Ed sought refuge in Hermanus, a coastal haven on the shores of South Africa. Here, amidst the salty breeze and rolling waves, Lembu Crafts rose from the ashes, heralding a new chapter in their journey.

From humble beginnings in a garden shed, they breathed life into their vision, crafting hand-printed fabrics that adorned homes across South Africa. Ed’s evocative paintings found a home in galleries from Hermanus to Cape Town, captivating audiences with their raw emotion and vibrant hues.

In 2010, Lembu Gallery & Studio emerged, a testament to their unwavering dedication to their craft. With a team of local artisans, they transformed their vision into reality, offering visitors a glimpse into the creative process. Ed’s iconic ‘Red Elephants’ took center stage, drawing admirers from far and wide.

Despite the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, Lembu Gallery endured, evolving and adapting to meet the changing landscape. In 2020, we relocated to 10 Warrington Lane, where our gallery continues to thrive as a beacon of artistic expression.

Today, Lembu Gallery stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of creativity and resilience. From Ed’s captivating paintings to a curated selection of African crafts, each piece tells a story – a testament to the diverse cultures and landscapes that inspire us.
